Een interview met Makers Evy & Job van Studio Arbeit
Vrij impulsief startten Makers Evy Hachmang & Job Suijdam met Studio Arbeit en inmiddels lanceerden ze alweer hun 3e collectie art t-shirts. En dat slaat aan! Vanuit Den Bosch willen ze Nederland verder veroveren. Ook zouden ze graag deelnemen aan het Driving Dutch Design programma voor verdere professionalisering.
Waar zijn jullie op dit moment mee bezig?
“Wij verkopen zelf ontworpen en handgedrukte t-shirts. Vier keer per jaar brengen we een gelimiteerde collectie t-shirts uit. Onze inspiratie komt vanuit de kunst. Zo hebben we een collectie gemaakt gebaseerd op vrouwelijke kunstenaars en onze volgende collectie is gebaseerd op artwork dat we in de platenzaak hebben gevonden. Deze collectie lanceren we op 10 oktober! Daarnaast willen we ontzettend graag meedoen met Driving Dutch Design, dus we hopen (fingers crossed) dat we door die selectie heen komen! Achter de schermen zijn we bezig met een nieuwe website waar meer producten op verkocht kunnen worden. We willen van alleen t-shirts gaan uitbreiden naar unieke handgemaakte producten, waaronder lampen en glas-in-lood werken.”
Wat heeft de samenwerking met Makerting jullie gebracht?
“We zijn, door wekelijks bezig te zijn met de toekomst, dichter bij elkaar gekomen. Vrij impulsief begonnen we met een kleine collectie t-shirts en dit is nu al uitgegroeid tot een bedrijf waar we in de toekomst ons volledig op willen gaan focussen. Het heeft ervoor gezorgd dat we met onze neuzen dezelfde kant uit staan en dat we wekelijks bezig waren met onze doelen en het matchen van onze behoeftes binnen een bedrijf.”
Hoe zien jullie de toekomst?
“We willen t-shirts blijven maken, maar we willen ook meer zijn dan t-shirts. We willen een studio zijn waar mensen komen voor exclusieve, handgemaakte producten. Het liefst met een atelier en een plek waar we mensen kunnen ontvangen. Voor nu richten we ons op Den Bosch, maar we zijn van plan heel Nederland te veroveren en daarna de wereld.”
Hebben jullie tips voor Mede-Makers?
“De stap om volledig autonoom te werken was in het begin best wel spannend. We wisten niet hoe mensen zouden reageren en of ze het wel mooi zouden vinden. Gelijk na de lancering van onze eerste t-shirts merkten we hoeveel mensen het juist waarderen dat we ons eigen ding doen. Misschien zijn onze ontwerpen niet voor iedereen, maar de mensen die het leuk vinden zijn ook écht heel enthousiast! Dus de tip is: doe vooral wat je zelf goed vindt, wat je zelf leuk vindt, dat publiek komt vanzelf wel!”
Zijn jullie op zoek naar hulp (of inspiratie) van andere Makers en wat zoeken jullie dan?
“Ik denk dat we vooral zoeken naar mensen met een autonome insteek, maar die een stuk commerciëler zijn dan wij. We zijn beide heel creatief, maar de focus op geld verdienen mist nog een beetje. Veel makers kunnen doen waar ze zin in hebben en leven daar ook van. Dat is momenteel ook ons doel, dus kijken we vooral naar deze makers.”

What are you working on at the moment?
‘We sell hand-designed and printed shirts via our website. We release a limited collection of shirts four times a year. Our inspiration comes from art. For example, we created a collection based on female artists and our next collection is based on artwork we found in the record store. In addition, we really want to participate in Driving Dutch Design, so we hope (fingers crossed) that we will make it through that selection! Behind the scenes we are working on a new website where more products can be sold. We want to expand from just t-shirts to handmade products including lamps and stained glass work.’
What has the collaboration with Makerting brought you?
‘We have come closer together by working on the future every week, because we started quite impulsively with a small collection of t-shirts and this has already grown into a company that we want to fully focus on in the future. It has ensured that we are on the same page and that we were working on our goals and matching our needs within a company every week.’
How do you see the future?
‘We want to continue making shirts, but we also want to be more than shirts. We want to become a studio where people come for exclusive, handmade products. Preferably with a studio and a place where we can receive people. For now we are focusing on Den Bosch, but we plan to conquer the whole of the Netherlands and then the world.’
Do you have any tips for fellow makers?
‘When we took the step to work completely autonomously, it was quite exciting for us in the beginning. We didn’t know how people would react or whether they would like it. Immediately after the launch of the first shirts, we noticed how many people appreciated the fact that we were doing our own thing. Our designs may not be for everyone, but the people who like them are really enthusiastic! So the tip is, do what you think is right, what you like, the audience will come naturally!’
Are you looking for help (or inspiration) from other Makers and what are you looking for?
‘I think we are mainly looking for people with an autonomous approach, but who are a lot more commercially focused than us. We are both very creative, but the focus on making money is still a bit lacking. There are simply a lot of makers who do what they like, but who can actually make a living from it. That is also our goal at the moment, so we mainly look at these makers.’
